Jukebox fails with message: Cannot read device geometry

Tape changes or jukeboxes often support multiple modes of operation, namely there are modes called random mode and sequential mode.

In random mode, the media changer can be fully accessed via the SCSI interface and media can be transported to and from the drive(s).

In sequential mode, the media changer simulates a huge single tape and performs automatically the required actions to continue with the next tape when one tape is full. This mode is dedicated to software that is unable to handle media changers, like e.g. the Unix tar command. In sequential mode, the media changer cannot be controlled by software.

PresSTORE does support media changers and requires access to the individual medium. Because of that, the sequential mode is not supported. When trying to access a jukebox in sequential mode, several errors or error messages can appear depending on the changer type:

  • The PresSTORE server log may show the error messages: Cannot read device geomentry
  • The Jukebox may state all slots (sometimes excepts one) to be empty, even if the tapes are in
  • The error message move medium: failed! (illegal request - source element empty) may arise
  • Low level SCSI errors may arise when PresSTORE attempts to move a media in the changer

Specially for the DELL PV 124T Autoloader it is known that there exists one firmware version that does not support the random mode. In case your drive does not support switching to the random mode in the jukebox menu, please contact the vendor of the device how to set the random mode.
