A Tool to Correct a Changer's Configuration When Drives are Improperly Mapped
Posted by Sven Koester, Last modified by Andre Kuehnemund on 10 May 2011 11:57

During the autodetection of drives and changers, it sometimes happens that the drives are mapped in a wrong order, especially when configuring Fiber-Channel devices. The media changer accesses drives by their physical position, whereas PresSTORE "sees" them by their logical address on the line. In case the drives are not mapped correctly, the media cannot be mounted because they get transported to one drive and the attempt to mount them is done on another.

This utility's special purpose is to detect and correct the wrong mappings. In case the changer's autodetection is faulty, not all drives are recognized by the operating system or an error arises during the autodetection in PresSTORE, this utility will not help to solve the probem.

When using this utility, please follow these steps:

  • Make sure all drives are empty (this affects single drives outside the changer as well).
  • Make sure there is one tape in the changer that can be used for testing.
  • Check in the PresSTORE Jukebox manager which name the changer has.
  • Change in a terminal to the PresSTORE directory cd /usr/local/aw
  • Call the utility: bin/nsdchat -c cli::jukebox::correctConfig juke_name
  • In case you want a specific tape to be used for testing, add the logical slot number as the second parameter
In case the utility is executed on a Windows host, use the following syntax instead:
  • Change in a terminal to the PresSTORE directory: cd \program files\ARCHIWARE\PresSTORE
  • Call the utility: bin\nsdchat.exe -s awsock:/user:passw@localhost:9001 -c cli::jukebox::correctConfig juke_name

PresSTORE will then move the tape to each drive and attempt to mount it in order to check and/or change the configuration.
Note that the complete porcedure is a lenghtly operation. It is not uncommon to wait for more than an hour for a six-drive changer's configuration to be cross-checked and rectified.

In PresSTORE 4, it is recommended to simply delete and re-add the jukebox, followed by a mount inventory. This procedure is considerably faster and also fixes the erroneous drive mappings.
